Remarkable for its melodic invention and Slavic intensity, the Vespers was first performed in 1915 as a fund-raising concert for the war effort, and has since become one of the crowning glories of Russian sacred music.
Both unaccompanied and virtuosic, the magnificent hour-long work was inspried by the All-Night Vigil service of the Russian Orthodox Church.
